Welcome to a new year of The Broadbridge Bombshells WI. On this blog I will be keeping you up to date with every meeting, what we do, pictures and general 'need to know' information.
Our January meeting saw us struggling to St John's Church Hall in the dark and braving the freezing rain, it was truly a horrible night, but all this was about to change! The committee (missing our Treasurer Debs, who was in quarantine after a minor operation - get well soon Debs) were excited to see how many of our ladies would renew, and we are pleased to report that a good proportion of you did, so we must be doing something right.
As always the first part of the meeting sees Rowena, our president, giving her monthly update, as we haven't seen each other since our Christmas get together there was a fair bit to talk about including including setting up a new sub-group - Wine Club! There was a fair bit of interest, so if this is something you'd like to be involved with please do let the committee know. We also had the opportunity to vote for the resolution which would be adopted for 2020, the choices were many and varied (see the NFWI website for details of all of the resolutions). The Bombshells voted for resolution no. 6 Don't Fear the Smear:
6. Don’t fear the smear
Cervical screening saves around 5,000 lives a year, yet attendance is currently at its lowest for a decade. The NFWI urges WI members to attend routine screening, to take action to raise awareness of the importance of cervical screening and address barriers to attendance to help eradicate cervical cancer.
Our vote has been submitted to NFWI, watch this space to see if our choice is successful.
Then onto the main event, if like me, you took part in dry January and simply replaced wine with cake, then you would have loved our speaker Caroline from cake decorating company 'Sugared Pumpkin'. Caroline runs her own business creating fabulous celebration cakes, you can see examples of her amazing work on her website www.sugaredpumpkin.co.uk and she also has a Facebook page showcasing her fabulous cakes.
Caroline expertly demonstrated how to ice a cake with buttercream stripes, apply drip icing, piped rosettes and golden chocolate balls for decoration. She made it look very easy, but I'm under no illusion that if I had a go my results would not quite look the same. But with advice on essential equipment, icing and decoration tips, we all went away feeling inspired; and even if we can't quite reproduce such a professional looking cake, we have all learnt a few things to make our creations look a little bit more fabulous!
We then had the opportunity to take part in a master class in creating rice paper flowers using nothing more than circles of rice paper, a tiny bit of water and a blob of fondant icing. Pictures of the results of our evening are below.
If any of our members would like to get 10% off of their first order for a celebration cake, we have some vouchers, just ask.
