As I write this at my kitchen table it is the morning after our annual Christmas celebration. Sadly this year was not like years gone by when we were all able to get together to enjoy a lavish festive evening at our President Rowena's house. So I am just going to take a moment to remember the fab buffet we enjoyed prepared by our members, the seemingly unending supply of alcohol and the lovely Lucy crooning jazzy festive standards by a beautiful Christmas tree, not to mention the fun of secret Santa and our very successful fundraising raffle draw... This year however, all of our celebrations had to be conducted online, so not our usual ‘go large’ party, but there were some positives worth mentioning… it was great not having to decide whether to wear the crippling high heels and little sparkly number, or think about how we were to battle the elements to get to the party looking fabulous rather than like a drowned rat, and how to get home in the aforementioned high heels with a few Christmas tipples inside us! No! Instead we got togged up in our snuggly Christmas jumpers, santa hats and tinsel tiaras, sat at our kitchen tables and sipped our Christmas tipples in the comfort of our bedroom slippers. Bliss!
We started off in the same way that all of our Zoom meetings have done, catching up with each other's news: we all made sure everyone was coping in these difficult times, the WI has been a light hearted lifeline for a lot of us during the lockdown and subsequent tier restrictions. Whilst we have been able to meet up for a few coffee mornings over the last few months, we have mainly had to keep in touch via our WhatsApp group and Facebook page, but if I'm honest, the monthly meetings have been absolutely invaluable to maintain regular contact with our lovely ladies. It has been great to be able to see our fellow Bombshells on the computer screen for a an hour or two and enjoy a quiz or craft activity.
This evening after the inevitable Covid/Christmas discussion there were some lovely positives to share: there have been a couple of lockdown grandchildren born in the last few months, so congratulations and information about the little ones was shared with both of the grandmas Lynda and Daphne. And proud mum Fiona shared news of her son gaining an apprenticeship at Tesla. I had had a few gins by this time, so I hope I haven't missed anyone's good news out!
Next up was a bit of fun in the form of a Christmas themed quiz. Do you know the names of all of the 9 reindeer? How far Horsham is from the North Pole? What star sign you are if you were born on Christmas day? Or Who played Scrooge in The Muppet Christmas Carol? And can you identify these Christmas films? (answers at the bottom of the page)
After lots of giggles and amiable disputes, congratulations went to our very own president, Rowena for bagging herself joint first place... and her prize I hear you ask, well to be president of our fab WI again in 2021 of course! Her fellow joint winner was our quizzer extraordinaire Mary. Second place was Vicky (also a very competent quizzer and tough competition) and in third our fab Secretary Jo, who was only 2 points behind first place, so all very close and nail biting stuff!
Here we are toasting the fact that we all survived 2020!
Although we aren’t sure what restrictions will be in place in 2021, if we are lucky enough to be able to meet in person we have numerous exciting activities planned. If it’s not possible to run these meetings face to face contingency plans are always in place.
Here are some of the exciting things we are looking forward to in 2021: Saucy Burlesque; Up Cycling; Easter and Christmas Crafts; Tai Chi; Rounders; Quiz and Film Night. We are also looking forward to resuming our regular coffee mornings and running our wine club again. Book Club will be reading Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier and getting together on Zoom to discuss it.
If all of this sounds like your kind of thing, and you are not already one of us, we are always excited to welcome new Bombshells to the fold. Your first meeting is always free so that you can ‘try before you buy’… why not give it a go? Check out our website and Facebook page for more information or email us for more details, we’d love to see you.
And so all that remains is for me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and keep my fingers crossed for a much happier and healthier 2021... and give you the answers!
