No matter how much of a fun and catchy title I tried to think of for October's blog, one has sadly evaded me and so I have gone for the very descriptive 'Annual Meeting and Christmas Craft' which is basically what it said on the tin this month!
Having been a Bombshell right from the very start, it surprised me a little looking back over the monthly blogs that Broadbridge Bombshells WI has been running now for just over two years, our first meeting being all the way back in June 2018. I think the officers and the other committee members will agree with me that sometimes it seems like we have been doing our thing as a fun, friendly woman's group for ever, but then other times it feels like it was just yesterday that we were organising those first few meetings and getting to know one another.
This October saw our third annual meeting (AM) since our conception... for those not in the know, the AM is something the WI Federation requires every WI to hold with as many members of the group attending as possible. In normal times this meeting would be held in our usual venue with a trusty cup tea, coffee or glass of wine and some scrumptious cake. Sadly due to Covid19 restrictions this meeting, like many before it had to be held on Zoom... but no matter, we are used to this format now and were ready, willing and able!
Firstly there was a quick introduction from our founding President Rowena. Secondly a nostalgic look back on the previous years activities with our Secretary Jo giving us a potted history of the fun things we've done over the past 12 months, followed by our hopes for the future and what we want to achieve for our members. And thirdly an overview of the financial report with our Treasurer Lynda to make sure we are solvent and able to operate for another year. This was all delivered seamlessly by our lovely officers, but unfortunately that's where the similarity with other years ends. In previous years we would have then held the elections to choose a new President, Secretary and Treasurer... but as these are unprecedented times we had no choice but to take guidance from the WI federation advisors and postpone the elections. This means the officers and committee remain unchanged. The plan is to look at holding the elections in the Spring of 2021, so if you would like to take more of an active role in your WI please give some thought to standing in a few months time. Remember it's not all responsibility and hard work, it's actually lots of fun, a great way to learn new skills and make strong friendships. So if you are inspired and would like to know more please get in touch with us, anyone wishing to stand will be given all the support you want from the existing officers!
So onto the more fun part of the evening, our Christmas craft. We always like to make something around this time of the year to make Christmas more personal and homemade, whether it be a wreath, decoration, gift or card. This year we endeavoured to create Christmas Cone Tree centre piece decorations. The simple process of rolling squares of christmas wrapping paper into cones and sticking them to a cardboard tube looked so easy... and was certainly entertaining to those who weren't taking part in the craft. I have included the link below for anyone who missed the group make-along and who would like to have a go.
In the meantime have a look at some of the pictures taken on the evening and a few of the finished articles.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday November 24 at 8pm via Zoom. We are excited to welcome our second speaker to give us a Zoom talk, Sarah Slater. Sarah will be talking on the subject of The Ghosts of Hampton Court Palace. So we look forward to seeing you all then for some historical spookiness!
