Taste Testing Treats and Tipples!

Who would ever have forecast that an evening of weighty analysis could have been so much fun?

This month, the ladies of the Bombshells WI were given a rare opportunity - that of being able to test one food against another.  It was a great evening and huge thanks are due to Sara, with the help of Lorena, who laid 18 portions of food and drink before each of us. The logistics were immense and the kitchen must have been set out with military precision to ensure no muddles, confusion or cross-contamination occurred.

Reminiscent of a Christmas morning, we began with three mini glasses of fizz, (non-alcoholic) to compare. Then came three lots of turkey flavoured crisps followed by three portions of cheese.

Each food group was tasted, tested, compared and ranked.

Within each group of three there were subtle differences. Sometimes there was a standout winner or loser, but very often more similarities than differences which made it far more difficult to judge. Although of course, comparisons and winners were totally subjective and down to personal taste. It was interesting to see that only occasionally was there a complete consensus on the table and among the whole group.

The food theme was maintained during the interval when we had a rest from eating and drinking, indulging instead in a light-hearted quiz on Christmas food and drink facts.

Then came the sweet course when we were presented with Irish Cream and mince pies to compare, and the evening of testing was rounded off with portions of three different milk chocolates.

When everything had been cleared away we had the results, with a show of hands for first, second and third for each contender, before Sara told us from which of three high street supermarkets the food had come and the price for each one. There were some surprises and this year it's going to make a difference for a lot of us when we go Christmas food shopping given how much prices are constantly rising these days.

It really was a fantastic opportunity, and great fun, but I suspect a lot of us had to go home for a cup of tea and a lie down after all that eating and drinking!

November also saw the Bombshells at the Broadbridge Heath Christmas Fair. We love to get involved in community events and this year we ran a very popular Chocolate Tombola, I think we had the longest queue at one point running around the hall! If you had a go I really hope you won something yummy!

And in addition to all of this we have been enjoying our usual coffee and cake meet ups in various coffee shops in and around the local area. So if you fancy becoming a Bombshell and joining in with all of this just drop us an email for more information, and make joining our WI your new years resolution!
