Our August meeting was an incredibly interesting talk on all of the things people have done to protect their homes from evil and natural disasters through the ages. Our visiting speaker regaled us with ancient tales of suspicions associated with objects that our ancestors had imbued with powers to protect their houses from witch's magic spells, lightning strikes, fire, flood and much more.
Many years ago people didn't understand that lightning and storms were just the weather and not the Gods, sending punishments down from above. So in order to ward off evil or divine punishments various things were collected which were viewed as lucky, such as stones with naturally occurring holes, four leaf clovers, sea urchin fossils, neolithic flint axe heads, old boots and shoes, horseshoes and even dead cats. These objects were treasured and kept safe on window sills or were placed in the eaves in the roofs of houses (boots and shoes and flint axes) or placed up the chimney (dead cats). We also learned about the significance of eyes in Greece and Turkey and even about the colour red and butterflies in South Korea.
After all of this I was relived that unbeknownst to me I had picked up several of these
lucky charms throughout my life without knowing how much power they held and thus had been protecting my home for many years! Whilst camping with my family in the 1970's I found a four leaf clover in a field, pressed it and have it somewhere still, I bought a glass eye souvenir home after a trip to Turkey in the 1990's and in the early 2000's I found my very first fossil, a sea urchin or 'shepherd's crown' as they are colloquially know. I am very pleased I am so well protected! I always loved the 'mummified cat' in Horsham Museum too, but I haven't got one of them!
So what else has been going on with the bombshells? A load of us met up to learn how to play Pétanque, we had some fabulous teachers from the Cranleigh Pétanque Club and by the end of the evening I think we'd got the hang of the basics. We also had a lot of fun, we are looking forward to a rematch!
Thanks so much to our member Sandie and The Cranleigh Pétanque Club for making us so welcome.
We had our first lunch club date at The Frog and Nightgown in Faygate which was well attended and a great success. Thanks so much to our Social Secretaries Lorena and Mel for organising all of our outings to coffee shops and cocktail bars!
Lots of coffee club meet ups and an afternoon tea, more of which are being organised as I type:
Cocktail Club has had a few more meetings as well, with a new venue being planned for our next one:
We are always pleased to welcome new members to our friendly group, so if all this sounds like your idea of fun, then please check out the rest of this website and our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/bbhwi
